Hello December

This morning a man walked from the other side of an hotel restaurant to tell me “Wow you are beautiful.”  Those words I have heard before but when someone compliments you in a genuine way, it never gets old. He proceeded to ask me how I was and told me to have a nice day. Frankly, he made my day.

About two hours later, I answered a phone call at work from one of our clients. He asked me for my name and I told him. He said “Now that is a beautiful name. It reminds me of a virtuous woman. Look up virtuous woman.” I am familiar with the Proverbs 31 bible verse so I did not intent to research it. Then seconds later he says, “Instead of you looking it up I will say it to you: Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.” He said, “I just wanted to give you encouragement today.”

By now I could not help but smile. Today was supposed to be a tough day for me but the universe conspired to make it a positive one. Seven Decembers ago, my older sister passed away. It is not an easy thing for me to talk about. When someone you love dies it is painful and even more so when it happens so suddenly. On Christmas Day 2009, my pregnant sister had a car accident which left her brain dead and she died days later.

That Christmas morning before we received a phone call of what had happened, we were all feeling festive and joyful. Unfortunately our joy quickly turned into sadness. It was a very tough period for me and my family. I honestly cannot adequately put the experience into words. We all miss her so much and that will never change.

Two things stuck with me from that day. One, life is transitory and nothing lasts forever. Whenever I am up or down, I always try to remember that no situation is permanent. Good or bad, I do not let my temporary feelings affect my permanent happiness. I have to live my best life no matter what happens. Second, I always say a prayer for those going through difficult times. During the holiday period, I sometimes get antsy because I remember my sister’s death. Mostly though it is because I am thinking about all the people around the world going through really tough times while the rest of us are celebrating. Trust me, it is not an easy thing to experience. I pray for them to find comfort.

I will end this post in the same positive tone that I started it. To anyone out there reading this, know that you are beautiful. Please let us spread beauty into this world because we are only here for a short period. Love always.
